The Webometrics World University Ranking (UK: Webometrics Ranking of World Universities ) is an initiative to promote and open access to scientific publications in order to increase the presence of academics and research institutions on the Website. The rankings began in 2004 and are based on a mix of indicators that take into account the volume and content of Web, the visibility and impact of web publications according to the number of external links received. The rankings are updated every January and July, providing Web indicators for universities and research centers around the world. Approaches that take into account the diversity of scientific activity represented on academic sites are often represented by the use of bibliometric indicators.
With thanks to God, UMA -Universitas Medan Area once again achieved a very proud achievement, especially in the campus environment by winning 1st place for private universities in all of North Sumatra and 74th place for private universities at the national level in an assessment called Webometrics.
This is a new discipline called Cybermetrics or Webometrics. Webometrics uses quantitative methods that design and implement indicators that allow measuring scientific activity on the web.
Webometrics releases the ranking results twice per year, namely in January and July. According to the Head of IT at the Medan University Area, the ranking illustrates the level of quality of the higher education being assessed. “This is a proud achievement of UMA at a time of concern for the Covid-19 pandemic. UMA continues to improve its quality so that it can compete at the national and international levels,”.
This ranking achievement is based on UMA’s success in meeting Webometrics’ assessment which consists of three indicators, namely Visibility (50%), Transparency (10%), and Excellence (40%).
Rangga “Head of PDAI -IT UMA” added that the Covid-19 pandemic situation helped familiarize and optimize the application of online learning. Not only conducting online lecture activities for students, UMA academics also often share knowledge through webinars which can now be easily accessed by the public.
UMA’s achievement in the Webometrics ranking, he admitted, sparked the enthusiasm for UMA to be at the forefront in utilizing information communication technology for the advancement of the nation’s education and research.
Webometrics is a worldwide university ranking system based on websites. Webometrics believes that web presence and visibility can be used as indicators of a university’s global performance. This indicator considers the commitment of teaching, research results, international achievements to relations with the community, including the industrial sector and the university economy.
